This guide covers everything you need to know about how to change spark plugs. We've researched the most common causes, real diagnostic procedures, and actual repair costs. This is one of the most searched automotive repair topics (150K+/month), so we've made it comprehensive.
Tools You'll Need
- Spark plug socket (5/8" or 13/16")
- Extension and ratchet
- Torque wrench
- Spark plug gap tool
- Anti-seize compound
- Dielectric grease
- Compressed air or blow gun
- New spark plugs
Parts & Estimated Costs
| Part | Cost | Recommended Brands |
|---|---|---|
| Spark plugs (copper, platinum, or iridium) | $8-25 each | NGK, Denso, Bosch, ACDelco, Motorcraft |
| Anti-seize compound | $5-10 | Permatex, Loctite |
| Dielectric grease | $5-10 | Permatex, CRC |
Step-by-Step Repair
- Engine must be completely cool before starting
- Remove engine cover if present
- Blow compressed air around spark plug wells to remove debris
- Disconnect ignition coil connector
- Remove coil hold-down bolt, pull coil straight out
- Inspect coil for cracks, carbon tracking, or oil contamination
- Remove spark plug with socket and extension
- Examine old plug - color tells you about engine condition
- Check new plug gap with gap tool (spec usually 0.035"-0.055")
- Apply tiny amount of anti-seize to plug threads (skip if plug has coating)
- Install new plug by hand first - never cross-thread
- Torque to spec (usually 10-20 ft-lbs for aluminum heads)
- Apply dielectric grease to inside of coil boot
- Reinstall coil, connect connector
- Repeat for all cylinders
- Start engine - should run smooth immediately
Reading Your Old Spark Plugs
| Plug Condition | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Light tan/gray | Normal, healthy engine |
| Black and sooty | Running rich or oil burning |
| White/blistered | Running lean or overheating |
| Oil-fouled | Worn valve seals or piston rings |
| Wet with fuel | No spark or severely flooded |
Pro Tips
- Iridium plugs last 100K+ miles but cost more - worth it
- Never gap iridium or platinum plugs - the coating is fragile
- Replace coils at the same time if over 100K miles
- If a plug is hard to remove, soak with penetrating oil and work it back and forth
